FRida & freD is housed in a newly erected building of a special architectural style and enjoys a unique location, right in the middle of one of the many parks in Graz – Augarten Park. For children of all age-groups, Frida & freD offers exhibitions, workshops, theatre performances and other events.
The Children’s museum of Graz, opened in 2003, should be a “realisable world” for children, and this is meant in the truest form of the word, as the museum is a place where children can have a go and see things as they work, which is the first step to comprehension. We give concepts such as experiencing, learning by example and cooperation and sharing top priority. Interacting, experimenting, having a go and learning by doing also take priority.
Keeping the motto "hands on – minds on" in mind, we try to devise exhibitions where a strong emphasis on hands on contact with objects is desired. The experiments and objects don't stand independently; rather they are embedded within a larger story and continuous theme. We try not to create pre-prepared or ready-made stations and activities. Our goal is to use our exhibitions and objects to create a basis for a deeper development an understanding. Children who visit our exhibitions have the opportunity to discover the variously themed worlds with all of their senses, and without constraints on time.
With our programs we want to enable children to learn about the diversities of our world and to better understand its complexities. Alongside the contents of our museum we concentrate on making sure that the young people who visit us develop into confident and responsible citizens who interact carefully with their fellow human beings and their environment. Therefore we want to be a place where children and their parents feel at home, a place that excites their senses and inspires their fantasies, a place that touches their hearts and encourages their creativity.
