The German Museum of Technology is part of a foundation (Stiftung Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin). The other parts of this foundation are the Science Center Spectrum, Archenhold-Sternwarte (Archenhold Observatory), Zeiss-Großplanetarium (Zeiss Planetarium) and the Zucker-Museum (Sugar Museum).
The German Museum of Technology presents a broad spectrum of old and new technology and demonstrates the various historical connections to culture and everyday life. Daily demonstrations, visitor activities and guided tours – as well as experiments in the Spectrum Science Centre – make the German Museum of Technology an interactive learning experience.
The German Museum of Technology, founded in 1982, stands in a long tradition of scientific and technical collections.
Many of these had their home in Berlin for more than 120 years, and some of these collections have been taken over by the Deutsches Technikmuseum. A great deal, however, was destroyed during the Second World War, or moved elsewhere.
The museum opened in 1983 with 2.000 qm and has grown constantly since then. In 2003 and 2005 the new building with the exhibitions “Air and Space” and “Shipping” opened.
Today, the museum has around 25.000 qm and invites the visitors to an enjoyable journey of discovery through the cultural history of technology (Photo and film technology, Paper making, Setting and printing, Textile technology, Telecommunications, Zuse computer, Navigation, Aviation and space flight, Railways, Case and jewellery making).
The Zucker-Museum (Sugar Museum), the Archenhold-Sternwarte (Archenhold Observatory) and the Zeiss Planetarium are attractive outposts of the German Museum of Technology.
