[Date: 2008-08-05]
The first workshop on incentives for the semantic web will take place on 27 October in Karlsruhe, Germany, as part of the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC2008).

The workshop, which is supported by the EU-funded project Active ('Enabling the knowledge powered enterprise'), will be organised as a full-day event. It is designed to be a forum for presenting novel research achievements and their prototypical implementation, as well as for discussions and the exchange of ideas.

It will address incentives for building the semantic web, such as ontology construction, semantic annotation, and ontology alignment.

In addition, it offers the opportunity to present original academic work in the field including:

- motivations and incentives of several Web 2.0 applications;
- suggestions as to how those motivations can be put to use in semantic web applications;
- incentive structures both within enterprise intranets and the open web;
- games;
- tools exploiting collective intelligence and the 'wisdom of crowds';
- community-driven applications;
- monetary and non-monetary rewards;
- social applications in general;
- empirical studies on the usage of Web 2.0 or social semantic web applications;
- motivations and incentives for annotating web services.
